1 Maccabees

One of the books of the Bible considered apocryphal by Jerome-supporting Protestants and Deuterocanonical by Augustine-supporting Roman Catholics.

Written to record a spiritual history of the nation, except, unlike Chronicles, it deals exclusively with the Maccabean period and provides an account of the Hasmoneans. It draws upon genuine literary sources, although the authenticity of parts of the work has been questioned.
